The Dragon's Delve

Session 15 - The Aberrant Laboratory

As if opening a portal to Hell wasn’t bad enough, there was strong indications that the portal, over the next while, would be continuously growing.

In finding the legendary Terregaunt, you had the means to get back up to the top of the tower as well as an ally to help thin numbers while a solution was found.

Choices were made and Felstor and Aurelious agreed to work together to research solutions above ground, while our Salvage company would attempting to go deeper into the Delve, looking for answers (and, of course, treasure) there.

Using the Red Saint’s Sceptre and the odd tattoos on their arms, a new stairway opened downward, allowing you to bypass the Prison, and head further downward.

The first room you discovered has yet another of the strange circles on the ground. Masq boldly stepped forward, eager for his 9th tattoo…

…but instead discovered how sticky and annoying the creature known as a Mimic is.

Dispatching it, you started the exploration of a new level… all indications point to this being some sort of Laboratory.

The exploration of the level had it’s ups and downs.

Your group ran into Cupboard mimics and intestine mimics, the mage was nearly blown apart by a sonic trap, a combination acid/fire shower seemed to prevent access to a section of the tunnels, a HUGE room, encased in ice was found, a MASSIVE electrical wall seem to surround and power the level that you were on

It was not all for nothing, though, as treasure was found, family was reunited, and a clue to a possible solution to stopping the Abysmal Effect was unearthed.

For treasure, a carpet was found that seemed unusually clean yet gave off no magical aura. A potion bottle (though it nearly killed our mage), has resisted all attempts to identify it. A dead wizard provided lots of neat “stuff”

In one room, Nue’s mother, the Mage Serresstique was finally located, only to disover that she’s been trapped in some sort of stasis prison, the method of unlocking presumably kept in a small chest with the inscription, “The Vraedix has the command word.” Vraedix, a word used in reference when attempting to find out more information about Rivenyk and Czaraem the Wicked.

Finally, a dead mage was found and, on his body, a scroll which appears to be a page from a journal. On it, the mage, Setaraghos, was instructed to bring the sword containing Baine’s soul to a place called Khorant, where he’d find three other objects like the sword. These, were to be used to complete and finalize the effect. It was also mentioned, that these items may we used to undo the work that has already been done.

But, who killed this wizard? Has he already delivered the sword to Khorant, or did his killer take it? Way hasn’t Rivenyk or Czarzem completed this task themselves? Do those other objects still exist and if so, what role could they play in stopping the Abysmal Effect?

Answers to several mysteries have been found, only to lead to more questions. What will further exploration of this Aberrant Laboratory reveal?

Session 14 - Return of Terregaunt

Trapped in a prison. It sounded like some bad plot to an Evil Adventure Campaign, but for you it was a reality.

Even worse, you recently, and correctly, deduced that you were trapped in some otherly dimensional space. A pocket dimension that was somehow wrapped over the surface of a cube.

Masq and Nue had, what appeared to be, a clue on how to escape. Encountering several circles, and touching each, had inscribed six syllables on your forearms. Shouldn’t that be enough to escape? Six sides to a cube, six syllables on your arms?

But, in this odd dimension you were stuck in, there was more than the just the six sides of the cube; there was also “inside” the cube and “outside” the cube.

A previously unexplored brass cover, revealed a ladder descending into the floor. Oddly, after a hundred feet the ladder stopped forty feet short of the entrance to another room. Carefully using ropes to descend, it was discovered that gravity switched at this point, allowing everyone to walk upright down the wall.

Many tests were completed to verify this.

Hilarity ensued.

In the inside room, two things were found; a seventh circle, floating in mid air, and a glowing key hole, also floating in mid air, in the midst of a spherical room.

Masq, feeling left out by all the floating going on, lept for the glowing circle and found himself also floating in mid air. By sheer force of will, Masq was able to will himself around the room.

“I am magic!!” proclaimed the ugly, disfigured dwarf.

Nue and Pinchy, followed Masq’s lead in discovering their newly found magical nature, and both gained a seventh syllable.

Following another exit out of this room, the group found another case of gravity switching and there was much climbing on top of each in order to crawl to, then climb up a ladder.

Hilarity ensued.

Finally investigating the cube map that they had found, a small detail became apparent. A third “brass cover” was listed on the map, but in a room where they had found none.

It was quickly discovered that this was due to the fact that this one was on the ceiling. Could this be the “outside” of the cube??

Once again, the grouped climbed up, then across, a gravity switching hallway and into another large spherical room.

Hilarity would have ensued, but the joke was getting old at this point.

In the “outside” room, seven circles, representing the circles they had already found were floating around, and moving in mid air.

Much magic (and dice rolling) began as Masq and Nue chased after the circles they had already found, attempting to touch each in the order that appeared on their arm.

Success!! After touching the seventh, and final circle, an eighth syllable then appeared!

This had to be it! The final clue to escape the Prison of the Red Saint!!!

A small oversight on the DM, caused some misunderstanding of what Masq was using to touch the circles with, which, in turn, caused our valiant heroes to have no idea what to do next.

As fate would have it, this caused them to head back to the “inside the cube” room and use one of the keys they had found, in the magical floating keyhole.

The key they chose was inscribed “Terregaunt”. They placed the key in the hole and suddenly, floating before them in little more than a loin cloth, a man presumed missing and dead for well over 500 years, a man who explored the Dragon’s Delve with two other friends; Lord Saral and Nibul of the Seven Arches, and escaped with untold riches, a man who spent those riches on buidling a fantastical tower, upon which, the heroes gathered opened a portal to Hell…


The group informed him that he had been a prisoner for well over 500 years! They marvelled at the fact that he had, at one time, conquered most of the Dragon’s Delve! They has little to no intention of letting him know that they opened a portal to Hell on the top of his tower!

After freeing Terregaunt, you freed two other companions, a Griffon mount, Yelaff and a fairly friendly Ogre named Tunskalan (who, in an odd twist of fate is the great-great-great-great-etc-great-grandfather of a certain Ogre named Grumblejack. Getting trapped in prisons apparently runs in the family.).

After this, the all-knowing entity called “GM” realized that he should have given a clue on how to escape, and armed with this knowledge, the group returned to the “outer” room and spoke aloud the syllables while holding the Red Saint’s Sceptre aloft!

An exit appeared to a set of stairs leading both up and down. Exploration of lower levels would need to wait for another day. For now the group decided to return with a true Hero of Legend to their crumbling, less than cared for, head quarters.

The next few days were but a blur, between training their skills, and getting Terregaunt caught up on recent history. During this time, there were a few significant developments..

First, the group translated the note found after you were ambushed by a composition of humanoids that reminded you of the Beastial Host. [GM Note – I can’t recall if this was actually done, but I’m not expecting you to remember this small detail]


Your orders are to return to Stoneseek and look for the adventurers that fouled our original plans. According to our scouts, you’re looking for four people.;

A well built, strong human male.

A half-elf female who appears to be a worshiper of Gozreh.. you’ll know her by her deity’s favored weapon, a trident.

An elven sorcerer. If possible, keep him alive and return him to me. I believe he can be used as a bargaining chip.

Finally a disfigured dwarf; he’s never seen without his mask and appears to be an expert in unarmed combat.

Aside from the elf, find and kill the rest. They must be eliminated before we can continue our plans. Consider this group armed and extremely dangerous.

Once you’ve committed the descriptions to memory destroy this note. I have a feeling my other lieutenants have been ignoring this request. Our foes cannot find out that the Besital Host still lurks in the shadows, waiting for our moment.

King Scrall”

Next, the group introduced Terregaunt to Erro, Aura and Felstor, and (finally) revealed to him about the Abysmal Effect that was growing from his tower. It was decided that a two prong approach would be needed to stop this.

First, with demons coming through the portal, and undead littered around the tower as a defensive wall, a group would be need to clear, and hold, a path to the top of the tower.

Terregaunt, very much interested in reclaiming his tower, would be the perfect leader for this first pillar. He offered to gear up, kick off his battle rust, and lead incursions with Tunskalan to the base of the tower every few days to help thin the numbers around the edge of the tower and to determine how far the Effect is spreading.

Likely, more help would be needed when and if the final push would occur, but this was a excellent beginning.

Second, there was still no clue on how previous incarnations of Abysmal Effects had been stopped. While it was likely that you could return to the top of the tower, the trip would be in vain if you couldn’t close the portal.

[GM – Note – Adding this next section in to help advance the plot]

As you discuss ideas for discovering the method to close the portal, Boran offhandedly throws out, “What you think demon man Rivenyk wants with portal anyway?”

Terregaunt freezes up, and stares straight ahead, growing red with anger.

“Rivenyk?! Rivenyk is involved with this???!!!” Terregaunt forcefully rises, overturning a table, and, not-so-gently, places his fist through a wall. “I’ll see that demon BURN!!” he bellows.

After a brief moment, Terregaunt regains his composure and addresses the group. “My apologies for the outburst. Oddly enough, in our short time, I feel you’re a trusting group, and I think you should hear the story of what Lord Saral, Nibul and myself found at the bottom of the Delve.”

[GM – Note – Terregaunt’s story will be my next writing assignment for you guys. Ideally, I’ll have it out this week.]

Discussion were made about the next steps to take. Masq excused himself to go the bathroom. Nue excused herself and spent some alone time in her room. What are those noises anyways?

Everyone re-gathered. Boran blamed Evan for opening a portal to hell.

Erro offered to keep everything going on, away from the public, and from the Lord Mayor, for now. His reasoning was that reports from Terregaunt, from around the Tower, would help decided if the Effect is growing, and in the meantime, Erro offered to start building up his security force in preparation for an assult. He could use the newly found information about the Bestial Host as a reasonable excuse to do so.

Felstor and Aura decided to start researching answers on ways to close the portal. Aura was still planning on keeping out of site for the time being, the attack he faced at the steps of your home still fresh in his mind.

Your group would continue searching for an answer from within the Delve. Several references to Rivenyk have already been found, so perhaps there may be more clues within.

At this point, Aura took Nue aside and attempted to broker a peace between father and an ignored daughter. In the less than grand tradition of attempting to buy a child’s love with presents, Aura offered a +1 Trident for birthday’s missed. For now, there’s an uneasy peace between the two.

Evan had his own side adventure, meeting up with Devenor. Devenor mentioned that Max and the group were going to re-start their exploration of the Delve soon, and that Max seems to be changed and affected by something that happened recently, though Max won’t go into details.

The true reason for the visit was to talk about what happened during their last night in Cardenbally.

Over the course of the evening it was revealed that, as suspected, Evan transformed during their final night, but that so did Devenor. While Evan took on demonic characteristics, Devenor took on Draconic.

Devenor spoke, “At that point a human shape, made entirely of shadow, aside from it’s dark blue eyes, appeared, turned to you and spoke. “So, Czarzem. It appears our rival has been busy on the surface too.”

“Another man, wearing a regal outfit of crimson and copper appeared beside me, not completely there, but was someone whom I’ve seen in my dreams. “Hello Betrayer, “ it spoke, “I see you’ve been arranging your own pawns too.”

“At that point we lunged at each other, and I blacked out. I woke up and we were both covered in blood, my face gashed open and I fled. There are powers at work, using us as pawns, Evan. I care for you strongly, but it’s safer, for now, if we remain apart.”

When Evan returned home, he made a mental note that he needed to ask Felstor about the possibility of draconic possession.

Finally, after skills were learned, there was a chance to put them to the test. A note arrived at your home..

“The cult is planning something tonight. Be at the intersection of Oak and Tumbletack Lane at 2am.


Obviously a trap, the group decided to investigate anyway.

There, they found a drunken dwarf stumbling home, pursued by several shady looking characters. As they moved to ambush the dwarf, our heroes jumped into action.

The battle was quick, fierce and loud, attracting several residents to come out of their home. Our adventures beat back the presumed cultists, but not before one escape after casting an obscuring mist in the area.

Sherrif Erro Manson also arrived on the scene as the battle wound down, and the only item of note that you found was something entitled, “The Black Book of Venom”.

Quickly, you took the dwarf back home to recover and spent time looking through the book, while Erro started cleaning up the mess.

What you found, is detailed below…

Erro arrived in the morning to check in your group. The dwarf felt fine, aside from not remembering too much about the evening before.

[DM – Note – Adding this next bit, but I didn’t mention it during the session]

It was only in the light of morning, that you realized that this dwarf bore a strong resemblance to Masq. Related, or just a coincidence?

[End of Note]

What Erro mentioned was far more troubling. This “Venom Cult” that he’s been tracking for months has, so far, stayed underground and had not been in the public eye. All that changed last night. With the escape of one of their own, the Cult will soon learn that they were betrayed and ambushed. What will this change?

A Cult on high alert. Stirrings of a Beastial God thought to have retreated. A portal, slowly opening and widening over The Fallen Dutchy. A demon, Rivenyk, involved with this portal, and, possibly, a feud with Draconic forces. And what connections do our adventurers have with it all?

This will start getting better soon, right? Right?!

Session 11 - Repercussions

The portal to the Abyss had begun to open, and the only thing to be done was to head back to Brindenford and regroup.

It seemed there was only one lead from here. Determine who wrote the notes that sent both your group and Erro to Terregaunt’s Tower, find out what they know, and determine what was happening and how (or if) it could be stopped.

For the most part, the ride back was uneventful. Erro mentioned that he actually arrived shortly after you did, (after having received the letter), but that his entry to the tower was sealed by some sort of force. It was only after the Orb has been shattered that the door flew open on it’s own accord and Erro raced for the top of the tower.

The choice now was what to do about Maximilian. He revealed that he came along as he didn’t want to miss out on what appeared to be prophesy on the part of the, now revealed, Czarzem the Wicked.

After a few well put arguments with a sprinkle of threats, Max has agreed to be silent on the issue. Erro also agreed that keeping this on the down low for now is likely best. There’s no need to start a panic in the streets.

As Max left and you rode up to your home in the early dawn hours, something disturbing caught your eye; a trail of blood starting close to your front door leading inside.

Cautiously you crept inside and found the unconscious and bleeding body of an older elven male, collapsed on the floor of your foyer.

Right away, Neu went to work stabilizing his wounds and moved him into one of the empty rooms of the house. Though healing through magic and potions were performed, the stranger was, at best half conscious.

The group, exhausted has been up for nearly 24 hour straight and decided to try and get a few hours sleep while keeping watch over the elf. Erro mentioned that this was an elf named Lannor, who was in charge of a cheese vendor shop at the Marketplace, and that he wasn’t known to be involved in anything that should bring him harm. Erro said he’d return later that day, to check in on the status.

While he slept, the elf managed to shout out three things before returning to an unconscious state; “Danger… so much danger.”, “The Orb? They destroyed the Orb??”, and, finally, “Protect Nue… must protect.”

In the morning, the stranger finally came too, revealing himself as Nue’s father, Aurelious. While it would be safer for him to remain hidden, recents events are now forcing him to come forward. As for the attack, he has no recollection of it.

“I should start from the beginning, it seems…”

But, before he could begin he mentioned that they’re being watched. He had you set up 4 jewels in the corner of the rooms as a sort of anti-scrying measure. By this time, Erro had arrived at the hom and, once Aura was satisfied that everything was ok, he began..

“While I consider myself an accomplished adventurer, the same cannot be said about me as a father. Several years ago, I adventured, and fell in love, with a mage named Seresstique. While we fell in love and bore a child, we realized that neither of us would be able to care for a child, so we made the difficult choice to leave Neu with close friends at a Chapel in <town>.

“Not the most responsible thing to be done, but responsible enough when you’re involved with the type of activities that we’ve been seeking out to stop. Our paths led in different directions and I’ve not see Nue’s mother for many, many years. She was focused on finding the Dragon’s Delve to seek out any and all information on the Mages Four. My path was much darker.”

“For the past 20 or so years, I’ve been seeking out a group that refers to itself has “The Venom Cult”. They are seeking out… someone. All I know is that this someone will bare a mark, but I know not why it’s important. I do know that if it excites them, it cannot be good. I also know that they were involved with the disappearances that, in one way or another, led you all here.”

“I have a mark!!” exclaimed Masq, who immediately realized and regretted he had probably said it with his outside voice. Today may not be a good day.

After much prodding, Masq removed his mask revealing a large birthmark that took up the majority of the side of his face. Sadly, Aura could not confirm nor deny that this was the mark they were looking for.

“I knew that they had Nue in their sights so I sent her a warning message and she fled here with myself following. I wanted to keep an eye on her and make sure she was safe. You see, I’ve learned that asking about the Venom Cult is not a wise idea. I hired someone to do some digging for me and I’ve not heard from them again.”

“But, while in town, I sensed something else.. a growing darkness as if something something evil was gradually approaching. My own experience as a Magus with my curiosity, led me to discover that this area was undergoing what’s caused an “Abysmal Effect”, a way for the Abyss to assert itself into our Prime Material Plane.

It’s happen before, in history and has been beaten back, though I have not yet discovered how. I do know what affect will happen if it’s not stopped, that much has been made clear.

Within 10 minutes of the gate opening, several small demons will begin entering through the fissure. Roughly 10 minutes after that, the power of the gate will animate any and all corpses into Zombies, constantly reanimating them if they should fall.

Within a hour, the Effect will begin to enslave those closeby with Evil in their hearts, protecting the gate from intrusion.

Over the next couple weeks, with defences in place, more and larger demons will begin to come through and, within another two to four months, the effect will begin spreading across the countryside. How far it extends out is not known.

Terregaunt’s Tower, it turns out, was acting like a conduit to other-worldly energies. Violence in the area was causing these energies to become focused, and the Abymsal Effect would not be far behind.

Knowing this was coming, I fashion an Orb in an attempt to stop, or at least delay the effect from starting. The Orb fed off the energy that the tower was putting out and turned it towards where the gate would open.

Using magic, I made my way to the top of the tower and placed it there, creating it invisible to any Evil creatures. The pedestal on which it stood acted as a scrying mechanism so that I could keep an eye on it from afar.

But, yesterday, I saw you at the top of the tower, and saw you destroy the orb, too late for me to react, and I saw what followed. I should have come forward sooner…”

At this, Erro produced the letters left for him, “Then who sent me this, elf?”

“That’s impossible..” Aura stammered. “No one knew I was working on this. That isn’t my handwriting. I’ve sent letters to Nue that will show this.”

“Letters??” exclaimed Neu visibly upset. “I’ve only gotten a single one.”

“But, I’ve sent many…” Aura seemed lost in thought.

“Regardless!” exclaimed Boran. “We must put stop to big portal thing that Erin broke, or else may spell end to Erin’s Salvage Company… working title.”

Everyone agreed.

“Then, there are a few things we must do, “ began Aura.

“First, it is no longer safe for me in town so I will keep to the shadows to learn what I can on how to stop the Abysmal Effect. If you learn anything, let me know.”

It was then agreed that to meet up, the group would lay a broken javelin head at the base of the rock that, allegedly, appears as the former statue of Duke Bryson Chrodille from time to time.

“Second, we need to gather allies. This group barely survived a single, though powerful demon. We need strength and numbers.”

“Third, I need you all to continue to grow and cultivate your power. You’ve been making great strides exploring the Dragon’s Delve and, although that route is exceedingly dangerous, it’s also likely the best way to grow.”

“Finally, we need to answer a few questions which should help us in our quest; who attacked me and/or sent the letters to Erro and/or prevented my letters from reaching Neu. What have the Venom Cult done with the missing people and is this related at all to the Abysmal Effect. Finally, we know that the demon Rivenyk is ultimately behind this. What are his motivations? Why do this now?”

With no further stories, Aura parted ways, though not on the friendliest of terms with his daughter. The rest of the group decided to spend the day preparing for a return to the Delve in the morning.

During that time, a rogue was hired to pick the Angel lockbox that was found in Terregaunt’s Tower. With in, a key with the name “Terregaunt”, exact in shape and size to three others found in the third level of the Delve. In it was also a note..


There’s more going on here than I first believed. Perhaps more than even the warrior Terregaunt realized when he commissioned this tower to be built. I had believed the unique aspects of its structure simply gave it strength as well as protect and preserve what lay inside. Now, I suspect the entire tower is a massive conduit channeling otherworldly energies. It is possible that the violence of the attack on the tower which liberated it from our enemy actually tuned this channel toward negative energies.

Until I can confirm or deny this theory, I bid you make certain that no further violence occurs within these walls. Even the most minor conflict may start a cascading reaction utimately transforming the tower into a portal directly to the plane of chaos and hate.

I shall leave Terregaunt’s key for the Prison here should you need to interrogate him regarding further developments.

“The Red Saint” Azasserah.

With preparations made, you set out the next day towards the Delve and were ambushed on the way by a group make up reminding you of the Bestial Host, though they’ve not been seen in this area since you defeated Ramscorn and used his red gem into tricking King Scrall into abandoning the area. Perhaps a note found in Goblin, on one of the bodies, will shed more light on this.

With this behind you, into the Delve you went, using the Red Saint’s Sceptre, found on the body of the half-celestial Uoto to bring down a force-field guarding stairs down.

As you followed these down, deeper into the Delve than you’ve have gone before, a feeling of transition overcame you, and you found yourself in a room with no stairway exits.

Though you’ve not explored far, you have come across nailmen constructs, a stuffed mastadon providing a heroic vision, feelings of transition as you move throughout the level as well as several symbols drawn on the ground that seem to tatoo anyone that steps within. So far, Nue and Masq have the words “Pha” and “Kul” on their arms.

Session 10 - The Abysmal Effect Begins
A blog for your campaign

After saving Max and his group, you returned to your home to spend a few days in Brindenford. The peace was short lived, though, as Erro approached the group with a note imploring him not to send people to Terregaunt’s Tower, saying that the “Situation was fully under control”.

The note seemed odd, you thought. Why would a note be sent specifically saying not to go to a location. Wouldn’t that encourage you more to go?

Erro wanting to finally get to the bottom of the disappearance of the other adventure teams suggested that you team up with Max’s group and investigate together. In the end, it was only Max that wanted to come, mostly due to the mystery surrounding the odd cloaked figure he say after you destroyed the Font of Dreams.

The trip there was uneventful.. aside from an oddly met centaur giving vague, dire warning about the tower containing a growing evil and that someone new had recently taken up residence in the tower.

The tower itself was a bastion of the undead and it wasn’t long that you discovered the fate of the previous adventurers; they had been turned to zombies.

Both outside the tower fighting alongside was appeared to be some sort of Anti-Palladin, and in the secret basement of the tower fighting along with a Necromancer, who was intent on opening a tomb.

After dispatching both groups, the tomb was opened, a brief bout of memory loss occurred, and, heading back into the basement, you discovered that the tomb contained the remains of a half-celestial being.

From the stories you’ve been told, the only half-celestial you’ve heard of in relation to Terregaunt’s Tower was one named Uoto. He battled Terregaunt (and lost) atop the tower centuries ago, before the Red Saint finally finished the job.

During the battle in the basement, something happened. It was if a change overcame the tower and you could feel an evil seeping through. For great dramatic effect, a dark laughter accompanied it, but was quickly cut off.

Battling through the rest of the undead in the tower, you reach the top where you found a demon guarding a portal with a beam of energy emanating from a round crystal sphere on a dias. Could this be what the mysterious cloaked figure mentioned in it’s last prophecy…

“Two signs have been revealed thus far.
One final sign remains.
The Tower of Green,
a scar to the sky.
There, a doorway is opening,
the Orb of White is the key.
The signs are revealed,
and the effect begins.”

After dispatching the demon, it was assumed that the beam was opening the portal. So, in heroic fashion, Erin blew it to pieces. The portal closed…. or so it seemed.

Erro burst through the door with a second message from the same unknown person, mentioning not to destroy the Orb, for fear of “The Abysmal Effect” beginning. Sadly he was too late and the portal snapped back open! The Orb and its beam was keeping the portal closed!

The mysterious cloaked figure appeared once more though, this time, the sky was no longer gray. It thanked you for following it’s orders and it’s cloak opened slightly revealing a mass of flies making up it’s body… A demon of some sort??

At that, the figure spoke in the same multi-person resonance that you had become accustomed to. “The portal is opening, Rivenyk.”

A booming voice then filled the sky as darkness started swallowing the sky above the tower..

R: “Outstanding, Czarzem. The Effect has begun and everything is proceeding as scheduled.”

C: “Is our agreement still in place?”

R: “Of course, faithful servant. Our establishment in Stoneseek is now under your direct control. Enjoy. Now, make sure to thank your puppets properly.”

Czarzem turns to you, “Ah, my Heroes of Legend”, he drips with sarcasm, “I told you there was a darkness coming, but I may have forgotten to mention that you’d have a hand in bringing in it. Consider this a small gift as my thanks..”

As the cloaked figure vanished, as a large 12 foot brute demon burst forth from the portal immediately hostile. It set it’s sights on it’s closest target, Erin, and a huge hulking fist seemed poised to end his life.

At that moment, Czarzem appeared for a moment, forcing the demons hand to stop through force of will.
